Student Collections at Mesa College

Every spring at Mesa College, Andrea Marx teaches the Advanced Design Class. In this class, students learn how to plan, develop, execute and create a collection of garments. These are then featured at our Golden Scissors Fashion Show.
To the left here, you can see the line-up, of various student collections in the Dressing Room the night of our show.
Below you can see a few of the collections as shown at this year's show.

Time to Catch Up
The month of May is now a blur. It typically is my busiest month of the year, and now that it is past, I will have time to catch up on my blog.
So, what happens in May?
Well, this May, I had numerous things, more than usual.
First and foremost was our college/program's big Fashion Show, the 29th annual Golden Scissor Show. I will be posting images shortly of that.
Of course, after the show is over, we then move onto catching up with all the grading that becomes back-logged, and getting onto Finals week for the semester.
A unique project that I worked on in May, was a Design Challenge for the Handweaver's Guild of America. I had been teamed up with a weaver, Robyn Spady, and together, we were to design and create fabric and clothing. We were sent a basket of yarn, and needed to use these yarns in the project. I will share what I can, but we are asked to keep things quiet until after the big Fashion Show in July. Then, I can publicly share images, etc.
I am also in the middle of an article for Threads magazine. The topic is Facing Alternatives. This involved writing an article and creating samples to show the step-by-step.
So, onwards.

Mesa College Students are prepping for the Golden Scissor Fashion Show
It is that time of year again! Our Fashion Program fashion show is one week away. The 29th annual Golden Scissor show takes place next Saturday, May 8th, at the Westin (Horton Plaza).
Yesterday, all the garments came in, and we were crazy busy with fittings, organizing, etc.
Here you can see some of the many activities that go on, a week before the show. This includes creating all the published materials (program, invitation, Save the Date card, etc.), as well as line-up lists, fittings, etc.)
Submitting a hat (from the Millinery class) and a garment.

Final sewing on a garment to be turned in.

A rack of clothing.

And.. a couple of garments, original designs by our students. Aren't they great?

Mesa College Golden Scissors: Collections
Each year, our senior students develop, design and create a collection of garments to be shown at the Fashion Show. Below are two Collections. The first is created by Svetlana. Her structural work was phenomenal. She won the award for the best collection. See the top three images. The second collection was developed by Mariel, and her focus was on luxury beachwear (Mariel is originally from Cancun, Mexico). One of her bathing suits was drafted in Garment Designer! See the lower image

Mesa College Golden Scissors: Fantasy
Our Fantasy Category is one whereby students are not allowed to use regular fabric as the material for their garment. Rather, they are to push the edge and create something crazy out of non-fabric materials. Check out Noel’s dress, made using paint swatches. Although I don’t know for fact, which students created the next two, you will be amazed at the child’s dress made from yarn samples, (I believe this was designed by Crystal), and the dress made from Dryer Sheets. The students said the latter garment smelled great!
