The Latest Fashion Accessory... a Python "Boa"

So, here it is... one of my 'fashion finds' from my travels to Vietnam. Travel with OAT provides lots of adventures, and here I am trying on a new accessory. Here is my Python "Boa". What is a boa? It is a long fashion scarf, generally made of fur or similar. What is a python? Well, it is a snake, found in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam.

btw.. the lump you see on the left side of the snake, was his snack, a duck. Supposedly, the snake can eat it whole, and digest it for the next two week period.

Fashion Helmets

Another fashion accessory of Vietnam that is new to me is the cycle helmet. Yes, we have helmets for our bikes and motorcycles in the States and Canada, but the ones I see here are different. Given that so many people ride motorcycles, scooters, bikes, etc., and the driving is a little hectic, I would say that the helmets are a necessity.

Try crossing the street (on foot) through a maze of cyclists and you will quickly see what I mean. So, here are a few shots of the helmets I see, and at the end, the one I an hunting for to buy to take home.

Face Masks as a Fashion Item

One of the most interesting fashion accessories I've seen here in Vietnam is the Face Mask. Originally utilized for hygiene and as a protection from pollution, these masks have now become a serious fashion item where the wearer can express their individuality. Some styles are shaped to mold the face, while other masks are creatively put together from a handkerchief or other source.

The holidays have been busy. But, somehow, I manage to make time for the creation of my non-typical Christmas tree. This year, she was focused around a dress form, and the theme of an angel. So, here is the basic progress.

Start with draping some muslin for a skirt... then, add some batting.

Then, add a outdoor screening for the skirt.

Picking Cotton in California

I recently had the opportunity to see my first 'live cotton field'. On a road trip, between the San Franciscco Bay area and Yosemite National Park, we drove through Merced and acres and acres of cotton fields.

So, we stopped the car and I got to pick some cotton to use in the Textiles class at the college.

Theatre in Fashion Exhibit Extended

The Theatre in Fashion exhibit in Beverly Hills has been extended. Please see the October 25th blog entry for full information. As of now, the closing date is December 14th, 2011.

Theatre in Fashion features 80 garments designed by top designers such as Armani, Capucci, Fendi, Marras, Missoni, Ungaro, Valentino, and Versace. These amazing structures were created for opera, drama, and ballet. Therefore, they are stage pieces and utterly fantastic. Sponsored by the Wallis Annenberg Center, the exhibition is located on Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills. As you tour the array of color, structure and creativity, you will walk through several galleries, laid out by designer. In numerous cases, you can see the concept sketch, and then the final garment.

Missoni Costumes for the 1990 World Cup in Italy

Couture Pumpkin Pie

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it's time to think about the menu. How about a couture pumpkin pie? As with fashion, just a simple tweak can turn a ready-to-wear style into a couture one. And so it is true with pumpkin pie.

I am visiting my parents in Canada, and this morning, my mom asked me to make a pie for lunch. She pulled out a clipping she had from Canadian Living magazine. The technique is simple, and the results are creative and fun.
So.. here is the technique.
After you have made the pie mixture and put it in the shell, smooth it out.

Take 2 tablespoons of sour cream, and mix it with 1-1/2 tsp of milk. Then take a funnel and put your finger over the tip. Spoon in the sour cream mixture.

Move to the pie, and center the funnel over the pie. Remove your finger from the tip of the funnel and let it drip out as you move around the pie. Start in the center and swirl your way to the outside.

Then, take a knife, position it in the pie mixture and move from outside to center. Do this eight times to divide the pie. On one of my pies I simply stopped in the center; on the other I swirled around a little in center.

Bake the pie as usual, and then cool it.

Cut and serve. Here is my dad, enjoying a piece of Couture Pumpkin Pie!

If so, I need to tell you about an amazing fashion exhibit in the Los Angeles area which has a limited engagement (four weeks). The name of the exhibit is Theatre in Fashion (Il Teatro alla Moda).

I first saw this exhibit in Milan last summer with my Verona Retreat group. We were all in awe as we walked through the galleries, and were pleased to hear that the garments were coming to Los Angeles area in the Fall.

I think what amazed me most is the fantastic architectural design that occurs when a garment is designed for the stage. I can guarantee you that you will not be disappointed in what you see. Every fashion student should make a point of seeing this show, sketch book in hand, to learn from the masters.

Do hurry though, as the exhibit ends on November 13^th, 2011. It is a four-week engagement.

To the left, you have the sunset, as I sometimes see from my back yard. We are looking over the Pacific Ocean, about 4 miles away.

There is nothing like a sunrise. This magnificent one occurred in New Mexico in August. I love the feeling I get when I am up early enough to witness a sunrise. I feel like I own the world.

Play piano,
Shower, and then begin my work day. All hopefully before 9:30 a.m.

Walk in Nature... for Inspiration

Yesterday, we went for a walk in the local area of Huntsville, Utah. We were to take shots of the plants, and later we would paint similar plant life in watercolor. The walk was simply good for the soul. The beauty of Utah and the open space can't be expressed easily, even with photographs.

Huntsville is located twelve miles east of Ogden City up Ogden Canyon. Its elevation is just under 5,000 feet. At the south west end of the valley, a shimmering man-made lake “Pineview” forms a mirror for the mountains above. More history.

As of the 2010, 717 people, 218 households, and 174 families reside in the town.Huntsville is rich in Pioneer history including the women who trekked into the valley.

Pushing Myself... Watercolor Workshop with Jane Lafazio

OK.. time to push. I have never taken a true drawing class. But, here I am in Utah, learning how to sketch and create water color journal art. Talk about stretchiiinnnngggg.

So... bit by bit, I'm finding my way. Thus far, I've done three pieces, and am losing the fear. Here is the class.

Our first sketch/water color, was to take a faux bird and sketch it. Then, ink it in, and then, paint it. Here are a few images.

Today, we went to 'town' and found objects at a boutique to sketch. Things like... a bird's nest.

Beginnings of the Word Series... No Stress

My interests vary and change over periods of time. This summer, an area of focus for me was paying attention to interesting words "on the street" as I traveled. It is amazing how attuned you become to seeing things you would never notice before.

So here you have "No Stress". This was posted on the wall of a home, in a small village called Vigo di Cadore, in the north of Italy. I went here with my cousin Laurie, in search of her family roots. If you could see the village, you would wonder why one would ever think there could be stress in a place as lovely as this.

btw.. We did find some of Laurie's family, and were able to trace her family roots back to the mid 1600's. It was an adventure!

Yesterday was a day for art and shopping in Venice. The retreat is now over, and the balance of the group has gone on to Florence. Maria and I went back to Venice to take in some of the art and to meander the streets.

OK..... I must 'fess' up. Inside the Chanel bag is a booklet of the season collection. It was graciously given to us by one of the shop assistants in the Chanel boutique.

Creativity at the Biennale in Venice

I am in Italy again, and sorely behind in blogging.

Thought I would get back into the groove by sharing with you some art from the Biennale in Venice. This is a bi-annual art exposition where different countries of the world have exhibits around the city.

This one was my favorite of the few I had time to see thus far.

This is the Ukrainian exhibit. It is called Post-vs.-Proto Renaissance.

The artists are the Van Eyck brothers, proto-Renaissance artists whose painted eggs form a structure in mosaic. So, ancient and modern art merge here.

If I read it correctly, the large piece you see here (behind me, as a size reference), is made from 3,640,000 painted wooden eggs.

Upcoming San Diego Gallery Exhibit "Fabric Free Fashion"

For the past year I have been busy acting as the Guest Curator for a Gallery Exhibit at the Vision Art Gallery, here in San Diego.

Our show opens next Friday, so I am putting the postcard here for all to see.
Hopefully local people can attend.

The theme of the show is UnFabric Fashions. There will be 23 pieces of clothing or accessories made from non-fabric items..

Think plastic forks, video tape, junk mail, makeup pads, plant life, etc.
Although it is amazingly hectic right now, the show will be great (once it opens.. whew!)

Bouquets to Art At the De Young

Talk about creativity! In March I was able to see the De Young Museum (in San Francisco) exhibit called Bouquets to Art. Floral Arrangers create masterpieces of plant life, to represent paintings and sculpture in the museum.

The San Diego Art Museum has a similar event, coming up the last weekend of April. Theirs is called Art Alive. I encourage all to go.

Life is like Raku

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of watching the process of a Raku and Sager firing at the Palo Alto Art Center in the Bay area of San Francisco. I was thoroughly enchanted with the magic of the techniques, and love the idea, that no one can predict what the exact results will be.

Raku is a ceramics/pottery firing technique, whereby the artist places a painted glazed piece into the kiln and once the glaze has reached a certain point, the piece is taken and placed in a covered container filled with sawdust and newspaper. As it burns, the carbon performs an alchemy magic and colors the ceramic piece. The unglazed areas turn black, and the glazes become the color intended with whimsical crackling that cannot be predicted.

After the container had burned its course, the artists uncovered their work, unsure of what the results would be, and ready to accept whatever happened. The moments of anticipation were actually quite exciting.

Here Jo is lifting a piece from the kiln and preparing to place it in a container. Look at the heat generated by the red glow inside one of her pieces.

Here are several finished pieces of work. You can see the top one still in the container.

Here is ceramics artist, Don Taka, with his raku piece. First, you can see the pot in the fire. Don is about to cover the can with a lid to trap the carbon in the smoke. Then, you can see him cleaning the piece, and the end result.

These pieces by Jo are the result of a Sager firing, which is a little different. Here, the ceramics are painted with a solution and sawdust, horse hair, leaves, feathers, etc. are laid on the surface. Aluminum foil is wrapped around the pieces that are then fired. Again, one is never sure what the result will be.

So, I have decided that we need to embrace life like a Raku. We are never certain what will happen, and we must be willing to accept and embrace whatever comes our way. All things have beauty, and it is up to us to see that.

Second Chances... Non-fabric Fashions and more

Recently, on a visit to the San Francisco bay area, I had the pleasure of seeing an exhibit in the United terminal called Second Chances. This exhibit was comprised of articles from the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since I am currently a curator of an upcoming gallery show called Non-fabric Fashion, my senses are tuned into creative materials used in creating non-fabric clothing.

So, here we have several shots from the exhibit at the airport.

Washington artist Shelley Hedges used discarded candy wrappers to make her dresses. She stitches them together and then constructs a dress.

Zandra Rhodes: Fashion Designer

Recently, I attended a lecture at the Mingei Museum here in San Diego. The topic? A retrospective of Zandra Rhodes work, and Zandra was the speaker. The Mingei currently has an exhibit of Zandra's work which is utterly fantastic.

Zandra spoke of her career and shared images of her work, her inspiration and the various fabrics she has designed and used in her clothing.

After her talk, Zandra took questions from the audience. The best question was "What do you wear to the grocery store, and what would you wear if you were to go to the Oscars?" Zandra answered, that she wears comfort clothes such as jeans, etc., to the grocery store, and that, actually, she was going to the Oscars, and she would be wearing most likely, the same wonderful full flare-legged pants she was wearing with a top and yellow hat.

Valentines Day Haiku Poetry

Of course, after we wove the hearts (prior post), we had to have a creative writing session (in the Textiles class, no less). I introduced Haiku to the students. This is Japanese poetry, consisting of three phrases, with 5, 7 and then 5 syllables per phrase.

The rule was (since it was Textiles class), that they had to use textile terms to 'interweave' into their poetry.

Here are a few examples of what we got..

The first two are mine... followed by the students.

Threads of history
Interlace our lives as one.
Building Golden cloth.

You are my fabric.
We have interlaced our minds
To create a life.

Today is Valentine's day, so, the softie I am for such things, we had to make paper woven hearts. Afterall, it is "plain weave"

Art Meets Fashion in San Diego

One of the events going on in my life, is involvement with "Art Meets Fashion" here in San Diego. This is the brainchild and project of the San Diego Visual Arts Network

Teams consisting of an artist, a fashion designer, a documenter and an educator have been formed, and are in the process of creating wearable art that will be displayed in a fashion show as well as a gallery exhibit in various venues of San Diego.

I am the documentation person, and have been taking photos and videos of our team.

Yarn in Verona! Jenny Klaer, Filati & Ricami

I have been to Verona many times, and have looked for yarn stores with no luck. You have to know who to ask, and so, you must ask a knitter. I was pleased to find out that my Italian friend Anna is a knitter, and so, she took me on tour of a few wonderful stores in Verona and area. We will begin with Jenny Klaier, Filati & Ricami. To the right here, you can see Jenny (left) and Lina (right).

First of all, meet Anna.. a fellow fiber enthusiast.

Jenny Klaer is the name of the store and of the owner. It is a lovely shop full of color, samples and of course, interesting yarns. Here are a couple shots of the interior of the store.

This is a great yarn, and you can see the project I am going to do. Jenny was very gracious and sketched the design and instructions for me. This is a simple shawl that begins with 151 stitches and involves decreases every other row. The first portion is knit with the edge of the yarn as your stitch. This creates a fringe of sorts. The latter body-portion is knit with the entire yarn forming the stitch.

Wheel?

OK. here I am with my latest purchase. It is an Italian child's bicycle wheel. You will think me crazy, but there is a plan.

I am working on a yard art project. Will keep you posted as it transpires.

I bought the wheel from(or should I say made a donation to) a company of young Italians who rebuild bicycles from various parts. Their goal is to recycle. They are now moving into creating a line of recycled clothing, so I hope to follow their progress.

Mozart and Organ Music

Mozart once played on a baroque organ (27 December, 1769), found in Chiesa di San Tomaso Becket, Verona, Italy. Last Friday night, I went to a concert there to hear Mozart music. Amazing.

The small group of musicians and the organist all sat up high in the balcony that you see here. The music echoed beautifully through the large structure of the church.

As a keyboard player (piano), I appreciate this all,and enjoy the history as well.

Traveling shoes are on, as I work on another writing project, and so am here in Verona, getting some focus time.

In between writing sessions, I get to meander the streets and see what is in fashion. There seems to be a lot of 'black' and neutral colors. There is also a lot of wool, and winter clothing, as it is cold this time of year.

Fashion Cookies

As another holiday project this year, I invited the Exec Board of our college Fashion Club for dinner. Of course, there was another project... the students cut out and decorated Sugar Cookies. I had made the cookie cutters out of 'Flashing' (found at Home Depot. The images were fashion clothing and accessories. Basically, I took drawings of clothing, etc, and scaled them to the size I wanted. Then I bent the flashing around the outer shape and used duct tape to hold everything in place, and to cover the top sharp edge.

From Vogue Magazine to Bows

Every holiday season, I host a creative party for the "Ladies from the Hood", (my friends from two neighborhoods ago). And.. we always do a craft. These year, we made bows from fashion magazines.

The steps are as follows:

1. Choose pages from magazines for their color, and cut strips 3/4 inch wide. The instructions called for three strips at 11 inches, three strips at 9 inches and three strips at 7 inches. Plus, one small strip at 3 inches. (Note: After making the first bow, I decided to use 1 inch strips and five of each size).

2. Then, twist and fold the strips as below, and secure with two-way sticky tape. The instructions called for creating three layers each with three parts. In the end, you roll the last short strip of three inches into a tube and place in the center.

Non-Traditional Christmas Tree

I can't believe the month of December has flown by without an entry here, but it is a crazy month with final exams at the college, holiday prep and family and friend celebrations.

So... for the past six years, I have been challenging myself by creating a non-traditional Christmas tree. This is yet another creative challenge I give myself.

This year... I draped my tree using window screening. Basically, I start with a Victorian frame (that I use most years). Then, I cut three rectangles of silver window screening, and ran basting threads of fish line along each long end of the rectangles. After that, I pulled the basting threads to gather the rectangles around the stand in tiers. I placed evergreen cuttings on top of each tier, and chili lights (what else for the southwest area I live in?).

To top the tree, I used a tumbleweed that a friend retrieved for me in Utah. (yes, friends know of my crazy ways).

Quilts and Family Heritage

I'm in Canada now, visiting my parents and family. Before I left, my mom called and asked me to take a photo of a quilt my grandmother had made to give me for my wedding, many years ago.

The quilt is a Dresden quilt pattern, and many of the fabrics used were from my childhood clothing. Apparently, my grandmother Koehler cut out two sets of everything, and my mom just found the second set. So now, she (mom) wants to look at how grandma put everything together.

These family treasures will stay with us forever.

Mesa Students at Photoshoot

A few weeks ago, I took my Photoshop class to a local photo studio DK3 Studios, here in San Diego. We shot images of the students posing, so that we could use them in Photoshop. Thanks to Dave King for his generous spirit with our students.

The Big Sock... working towards a Guinness Book World Record

At Newton's Fall Machine Knitting seminar last weekend, I had the pleasure to participate in The Big Sock. This is an effort to knit the world's biggest sock, and set a new Guinness Book World record.

The sock is composed of 1500 stitches knitted with ten circular needles. This makes it 23 times larger than a typical sock (which starts with 64 stitches).
The project originated in Hastings England and is now traveling the U.S. This is the first time it is on the west coast, and is moving to Stitches in Hartford next week.

The current world record is a sock that measures 16 feet tall.

Creative use of IPad

A few weeks ago, I went to the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. As I was meandering through the art galleries, I heard organ music in the distance. As a lover of music, I was drawn to locate the source and enjoy the sounds not only audibly, but visually as well.

Imagine my surprise (and delight) to see the organist, David Hegarty, playing the organ and using his Ipad as his "music book". Every few minutes, he would tap the screen to turn the page. As an avid Mac girl, yet again, I am amazed at all the creative applications I see with Mac people.

I emailed David and asked him to tell me more. This is what he said:

The iPad is a great repository for printed music. I scan the music and then load it into the ForScore app on the iPad. The scores can be arranged into set-lists for specific performances. And there's no awkward page turning—just a quick tap of the screen turns the page. There's even provision for making performance notes in various colors on the page. I can store hundreds of compositions in the iPad without lugging around bulky notebooks. Revolutionary!

Pumpkins as Inspiration: Glass and Color

Last weekend, I spent time in the San Francisco bay area. One of the activities was visiting a pumpkin patch. But this was not a typical pumpkin patch. Rather, it was what I would call a couture version of a pumpkin patch.

Welcome to the world of glass art pumpkins. Everywhere you looked you saw inspiration and color. It was similar to being in a candy shop, and it certainly was a feast for the eyes.

So… began the search for my pumpkin… Below you can see some of the candidates. Instead of one larger one, I finally settled for a set of three smaller ones, and they have been dubbed, Larry, Curly and Moe. I’ll post of picture of them as we get closer to Hallowe’en. In the meantime, enjoy my shots of couture pumpkins.

Knitters in the City (of San Francisco)

Last weekend I was having lunch at a little creperie in San Francisco. I happened to glance over at another table, and immediately had to smile, as lo and behold was a group of hand knitters, happily knitting away amidst chatter and laughs.

Given the nature of creative and yarn people, I knew the women wouldn’t mind a little intrusion, so I walked over to chat with them and find out more about the communal nature of group.

Meet ‘the Knit Wits’, (a newly dubbed name, by the way). This is a group of women who meet every Sunday at a little creperie restaurant near the yarn store called Atelier which is located on Divisadero in the city. The ladies have been meeting for two years. Their projects varied from scarves to hats to shrugs, and beyond. The knitting was well advanced in technique.

Accessory Design: Cochenille Retreat

A Funny Thing Happened in the Bathroom!

A few weeks ago, in Santa Fe, I walked into the Ladies Room at the International Folk Museum. A woman was standing at the sink, and she was wearing this great top! So, I couldn't resist, and had to comment. The next thing I know, Sue Dean (from New York), and I are chatting up a storm, and she's allowing me to take photos (including details) of her top.

Thanks Sue... we'll see how I use it in an upcoming project.

Day in Santa Fe with Retreat Group

Last Friday, our Retreat Group spent the day in Santa Fe. We begin with a group shot.

First we visited the Santa Fe Opera, where we were given a back-stage tour. The best part was the Costume Collection.

Next, we went to Santa Fe Weaving Gallery, a wearable art store in downtown Santa Fe. Below you see the owners, Jill (right) and Barbara (center), and their trusted staff person, Adele (left).

A Couture Pooh Bear Top

I just love when Garment Designer software users share their projects with me. A few days ago, I received an email and an image from Mary Jane Svenson. It warmed my heart to read her story, so I wanted to share it with those who read this blog.

Thanks Mary Jane for giving permission.. Here is what she emailed:

I returned from HGA where I purchased Garment Designer after taking the workshop and have been reading my manual with highlighter in hand! This Sat. morning my Grandson brought his bear to me and asked me to make him a shirt. We measured him together and I made a sloper and then a shirt pattern. While he attended a soccer game I cut it out and sewed it up on my serger. I sent him a picture of Pooh bear on his Dad's phone. He was so excited to get "such a perfect shirt" for his bear. The software is incredible! Mary Jane

Organizing, Part 2: A Helpful Tool

OK... the Organizing Challenge continues. My garage has improved, but I am still not ready to share photos.

Instead, to keep you entertained, let me share a great device and software product with you. I have used it to inventory most of my books.

I have invested in a little hand scanner device and software by called Collectorz. This enables me to scan the bar codes on my book, and then hook up to my computer, and upload the information into a database program. This then goes out to the internet and finds the information about the book, and feeds the information into the database.

I actually own three of their database products.

I think I purchased everything, including the scanner for well under $200. I did this a couple of years ago. I now see on their site that there are less expensive scanners than mine.

I inventoried all movie DVD's on Sunday in just a few hours (most of which was spent tidying, organizing, and alphabatizing.

As you can see, I know where they are, and I can see if I have loaned them to anyone.

Next... to get the I-phone app, so that I have my list with me at the store.

Themes... and Amore

One of the ways I continue to push myself, is to develop 'themes of study'. For example, I will decide that I am no longer going to sew a standard facing.. (at least for six months), and this forces me to look at ready-to-wear with eyes and mind that are ready to learn. You will soon see an article in Threads magazine (the October issue) that I wrote with four alternate-to-facings techniques.

This summer, one of my photography themes was 'bicycles'. I was constantly on the watch for them, as a subject to photograph.

So... here is a pair of photos... a front and back view.
I call this set Amore (love). The Italian man who caught me taking the photo looked at me as if I were crazy. I simply looked back at him, and said one simple word... Amore.
He smiled, and nodded. He 'got it'.

Designer Fabric in Verona

In early July my Retreat group visited Manegazzi Tessuti (a fabric store) in Verona. Paola and her mother Daniela spent time with our group, sharing various Designer fabrics with us. We were able to see Valentino, Chanel, Missoni, Pucci, Etro, etc.

What was best, was that we could see runway images of the fabrics in use by the designers. I was completely surprised by a few of the fabrics, and how seeing them in a garment changed the way I felt about them.

The 'Getting Organized Challenge'

Last weekend, I taught various seminars and workshops at Convergence, an International Weaving, Dyeing and Spinning conference that took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

On Sunday, I taught a class on 'Getting Organized (for Fiber Artists)'. Some of my friends would laugh, as they have seen my 'garage'. I know WHAT to do to be organized, it just takes a time commitment to do it.

SO... all members of the class and I took a pledge.. raising our right hands. We are all going to tackle some major organizational project at home, this week. And mine is my garage.

Now, note that I haven't put any photos up... yes, it is that bad.
But I will say, that it is already much better. I have spent about a day out there, and already things are improving.
Thus far..
books have been pulled for donation to libraries
Financial records that are past their IRS audit periods are ready for shredding (Salvation Army offers a service).
Piles are made for donations to the local knitting guild, my students at the college, etc.

SO... who out there has started to tackle their areas that need organization. We are all in this together, and I need to hear from you. Leave a comment please.

Italian Style #2

I LOVE the sense of these. Each one has what I call a 'zinger'.... one element that stands out. I guess I am drawn to anything that is a little different. My younger son would be laughing at me now, and saying... Susaaan...

While in Verona with the friends, Italy experienced a heat wave. We had temperatures of 35 degrees centigrade. Whoa, is the word, and melting was the mode.

So.. what do you do? You visit Wilma, who owns a little gift show on Via Stella in Verona. And, you purchase fans.

A Day of Repose… Reading and Writing

In preparation for a lecture I'm preparing for the Handweaver's Guild of America, I have been reading a lot on creativity and inspiration. One of the things I have seen written over and over again, is that in order to increase our creativity, we need to schedule quiet time into our lives. And so, I have been trying to reserve Sunday as a day when I take time to quietly reflect, think, and renew myself after a busy week.

This past Sunday, while still in Verona, I attended a lovely organ concert at San Fermo church, and then, I walked to a park near Castel San Pietre and spent the afternoon reading, writing, and listening to the crickets. I have claimed a 'rock' in this quiet little park, and I have been making regular visits for the past few years.
Here you can see a few images of my 'rock', and the view I have.

So... here is a formula that works for me.

Take a book, a journal, and a pen. Pack up some fresh fruit, and a bottle of water. Bring a hat, and a scarf, and make them colorful. Pray that no one else is on your rock. Then, when you get there, create a nest of sorts, and relax in whatever manner works.

For me this time, I took a book I have been reading and working with. It is called Your Personal Renaissance: 12 Steps to Finding your Life's True Calling by Diane Dreher.

I have been faithfully doing the various exercises by writing in my journal. The good news, is that by Chapter three, I was delighted to realize that I was 'already there'. I am already doing what I need to be doing. How great is that! Yet, I continue with the book and the various chapters which are offering me other ideas on how to best use my time and energies to realize my calling. I like learning about the various Renaissance artists and other historic figures that Dreher discusses as she uses examples to clarify a point.

As you can see, I had my quiet time. I was joined by thousands of crickets who sang in reverie for me.

Fiber and Care Label Humor

As a Professor of Textiles, I am always encouraging my students to read their fiber content and care labels. So, I want to share with you a label I looked at this evening, as I prepared to launder a dress for the first time (no more dry cleaning!!).

This is how the Fiber Content label read..
Garment Contains:
Body: 59% cotton, 28% cupro, 9% silk, 4% polyester
Lining: 100% Polyester

Garment May Soon Contain:
Grass, dirt, oil, paint sweat, tears, rain, mud, etc., but that is up to you.

And the Care Label said:
Washing Instructions (If you Must)
Dry clean.

For the record...
I placed it in a mesh bag to minimize the wear and tear in the washing machine. I laundered it on Gentle cycle with cold/cold wash and rinse. Hang to Dry. It came out fine.

Morning Rituals

There is nothing better than starting the morning with a cup of cappucino. And of course the Italians do it in style.
Note the two decorative designs on our cappucino. Here the Retreat group is meeting at Cafe Norris, my regular morning hangout when here.

Art Workshop with Giada Floris

Window Shopping for Inspiration

Another task given to Retreat Participants, was to walk the streets at night, and take photos of Italian fashions in the store windows. Here you can see Judy and Anna, planning their shot. It is a different experience to walk around and look at fashion with a technical mind; first, to notice the details, then to plan the shot, and then to analyze how to adopt the technique in your own sewing or knitting.

Here is Piazza Erbe in Verona, which was the starting point for our night Window Shopping experience.

Design Inspiration: San Zeno

One of the tasks at our Design Retreat, was to look at history and architecture as a source of inspiration. So, this meant a bus trip on the local city buses (and a new skill) to San Zeno, which is a beautiful church here in Verona. Here you can see our group, sitting on the bus, learning the ropes of local transportation.

Aida in Verona

Here you can see an image of the opera Aida. Our Retreat group went to see it in Verona. It was an amazing production.

Below you can see that we are preparing to have a potluck picnic at our seats (which by they way, are the stone seats of the Roman Arena. The initial construction was 40 AD).
